This project is a public market design proposal. According to the London E-food Desert Index (data source: Consumer Data Research Centre and University of Leeds), several areas in London are facing serious food desert problems. Many researchers believe that this situation is related to the decline of public markets. This design is one of a series of attempts to respond to this issue. It aims to propose a market model that can be replicated and to bring new vitality to public markets.
In the past, public markets in the United Kingdom played a very important role in urban life and were central spaces for public activities. However, with the development of modern food distribution systems, public markets have gradually disappeared from everyday public life. It is important to note that this project is not intended to criticize this trend. Today we have more efficient, convenient, and fast food distribution systems, and it is neither possible nor necessary to return to the time when public markets were dominant.
Instead, this project focuses on the areas that modern food distribution systems tend to overlook. In these places, markets based purely on commercial logic are difficult to sustain. Therefore, this design tries to combine the market with functions needed for public life. By learning from traditional public market models and adapting them to contemporary urban conditions, the project aims to restore the public role of markets. At the same time, it seeks to address food desert issues, enrich community life, and strengthen a sense of belonging and social cohesion within the community.
