Inspired by the Great Blue Hole, one of the largest marine sinkholes located off the coast of Belize, this piece draws from its immense depth, striking circular form, and the vibrant marine ecosystems surrounding it. Known for its mysterious ultramarine waters and dramatic geological formations, the site evokes a profound sense of wonder and exploration. Fascinated by its atmosphere, I sought not only to capture its visual characteristics but also to convey the site’s sense of mystery.
The piece reinterprets a monumental marine formation as a wearable sculptural structure through layered metal construction and dimensional assembly. Its distinction lies in balancing organic irregularity with controlled craftsmanship to create a tactile experience. Diverse materials and metalworking techniques were carefully arranged to balance color relationships, proportions, and structural stability while conveying the atmospheric depth of the original site. Through its layered construction and diverse textures, the piece encourages viewers to move around it and observe how depth and detail shift depending on the angle. This dynamic visual and tactile experience transforms the jewelry into a small immersive environment.
By bringing a distant marine environment into intimate proximity, the piece transforms geological wonder into a wearable form that invites contemplation of nature, exploration, and human curiosity. It proposes jewelry not only as adornment but also as a conceptual object—a wearable space and symbolic gateway into vast and mysterious landscapes.
