Nothingness is the central theme of this collection, developed through my long-term engagement with philosophy and its relationship to design. Rooted in Daoist thought—“One gives birth to two, two gives birth to three, and three gives birth to all things”—this project understands nothingness not as emptiness, but as both the origin and destination of all existence.
In this work, nothingness is viewed as a dynamic and transformative state. From a single point emerges a line; the line expands into a circle, which eventually returns to its origin. This cyclical structure reflects the Daoist worldview, in which all things arise from nothingness and ultimately return to it through continuous cycles of creation, dissolution, and rebirth.
To translate this abstract philosophy into a visual and material language, I introduced the red-bellied pheasant as a symbolic element. In Chinese culture, this bird is often regarded as the “phoenix of the mortal world” due to its resemblance to the mythical phoenix, a symbol of regeneration and eternal transformation. The pheasant therefore becomes a metaphor for rebirth within the space between mortality and transcendence.
The life cycle of the red-bellied pheasant—from egg to growth, maturity, aging, death, and renewal—mirrors the conceptual framework of this collection. This biological rhythm echoes the philosophical understanding of nothingness as both beginning and return. Within the design, the pheasant is not used as a literal motif, but as a conceptual anchor connecting Eastern philosophy, natural cycles, and contemporary fashion.
This project also reflects my evolving understanding of New Chinese Design. Rather than relying on surface-level cultural symbols, I aim to engage with Chinese philosophy at a structural and conceptual level. Tradition is embedded in the foundation of the design, not applied as ornament.
Ultimately, Nothingness remains an open space for interpretation. Through this collection, I invite viewers to reflect on void, rebirth, and continuity—how form emerges from absence, and how endings inevitably return to beginnings. The completion of this project marks a transformation within my own creative cycle, aligning personal growth with philosophical inquiry.
