The 2026 Central Taiwan Lantern Festival is curated around the concept of “Urban Culture, Light Art, and Sustainable Celebration.” Building upon Taichung’s long-standing tradition of hosting Lantern Festival celebrations, the event reinterprets the contemporary meaning of festive culture through innovative lighting design and international IP collaborations.
The theme, “Taichung Moomin on”, marks the first collaboration with the classic Finnish IP Moomin. By combining the imaginative world of Nordic fairy tales with the luminous artistry of the Lantern Festival, the project creates an internationally inspired urban celebration experience.
The project’s most distinctive feature lies in its integration of traditional lantern craftsmanship with modern lighting technology. By combining craft techniques, mechanical devices, and digital lighting control systems, the design creates a lantern festival that balances cultural warmth with contemporary visual art.
The main lantern zone, “Moomin Valley under the Aurora,” breaks away from the conventional single-object main lantern concept. Instead, it adopts a large-scale environmental theater design, forming an immersive main lantern scene approximately 60 meters wide. The surrounding environment incorporates fairy-tale architecture and character installations, allowing visitors to step directly into the story and become part of Moomin Valley, creating a large-scale fairy-tale light theater rarely seen in Taiwan.
Technically, the lantern structures are built using traditional lantern frame craftsmanship, integrated with LED light sources and digital lighting control systems. Dynamic mechanical inflatable figures enable characters to perform in synchronization with music.
Gradient lighting effects simulate the Nordic aurora, while lighting, music, dance, smoke, and bubble effects combine to form a 360-degree immersive theatrical environment.
