Overview: A Beacon of Green Urbanism
Strategically situated at the confluence of the Love and Happiness Rivers in Kaohsiung, Qixian Residence redefines the typology of rent-only social housing as a beacon of sustainable urbanism. This project proves that public housing can champion environmental stewardship without compromising quality. Distinguished by its rigorous adherence to Green Building, Intelligent Building, and Seismic-Resistant standards, it synthesizes low-carbon living with social equity, establishing a new paradigm for the post-pandemic metropolis.
The "Vertical Forest" Strategy
The design envisions the building as a "breathing vertical forest." The architectural massing features two towers oriented North-South, separated by a strategic central void. This "wind corridor" channels cooling river breezes into the city, actively mitigating the Urban Heat Island effect. To minimize energy consumption, the envelope employs passive design strategies: deep shading devices, vertical greenery, and high-albedo thermal materials. These are complemented by active systems, including roof-mounted photovoltaic arrays for renewable energy and extensive rainwater harvesting facilities for irrigation.
Social Sustainability & Function
True sustainability encompasses social resilience. Adopting a purely rental-based model, the project rejects real estate speculation to foster a stable, inclusive community. The podium (Ground–3F) functions as a 6,600 sqm community nexus, integrating intergenerational care (daycare and senior centers) and co-working incubators. This mix reduces the need for vehicular travel, promoting a walkable, localized lifestyle supported by B1–B3 parking and waste management infrastructure.
Resilient Living Ecosystem
A landscaped Sky Garden on the 4th level serves as a biophilic bridge, connecting residents with nature. The 606 rental units (4F–18F) are engineered for health-conscious living. Bathrooms are positioned at the perimeter for direct natural light and ventilation. Crucially, the implementation of "same-floor exhaust" and drainage systems ensures sanitary resilience, preventing vertical pathogen transmission. Qixian Residence ultimately creates a holistic ecosystem where environmental health, resource circularity, and social justice converge.
