Shenzhen’s Nanshan CBD is an epitome of China’s efficiency-driven urban rhythm: densely developed, relentlessly active, yet short of places to simply stop and stay. Launched three years ago at the heart of MIXC WORLD Shenzhen, MXTR BLOCK introduced a new typology of commercial pop-up space with a series of modular “boxes,” creating moments of pause within the fast-paced rhythm of the city.
In 2026, it enters a new chapter with MXTR BLOCK 2.0, rooted in the vision of “Stay in the Block”—a concept that embraces organic growth, relaxed encounters, fluid exploration, boundaryless connections, symbiosis, and long-term adaptability. Departing from a rigid configuration, nine pop-up “boxes” evolve into an organic urban cluster shaped by the rhythms of streets, trees, and daylight, offering a place of respite amid the intensity of urban life.
The core spatial logic is anchored by the idea of “growing around trees,” redefining the relationship between architecture and its surroundings. Three-sided transparent glass facades dissolve the physical boundaries between retail “boxes” and the streetscape, creating an open framework that is adapted to its context. A modular system ensures long-term flexibility: structures can be reused, while facades can be quickly renewed for different brands and evolving programs over time, reducing repetitive construction and supporting sustainable operation.
Responding to the site’s topography and existing landscape, the design introduces reoriented “boxes,” transparent glazing, semi-open facades, sheltered transitional zones, elevated platforms, and outdoor furniture to extend commercial activities into public walkways, dissolving the boundary between shops and the street. These interventions transform the circulation route into a pocket park that invites people to pause, gather, and stay, creating a shared space that nurtures everyday community life.
From morning coffee and lunchtime breaks to twilight gatherings and weekend family strolls, MXTR BLOCK 2.0 brings a more relaxed everyday life for those who live and work nearby. Within the intensity of the city, it becomes an informal place for everyday encounters, fostering a sense of ease and belonging. As commercial space gradually evolves into a public asset, it becomes increasingly woven into everyday urban life, sustaining the project’s long-term vitality.
