This landscape design aims to bring the ancient scholarly heritage to life, stepping out of the archives and into the rhythm of modern daily life. Centered around the concept of a “Modern Scholarly Hermitage,” the project blends the refined aesthetics of traditional Eastern estates with modern living, offering an immersive sanctuary that bridges the past and the present.
Rooted in classic courtyard layouts, the landscape unfolds along a central axis like an unrolling scroll, creating a ceremonial path home. Modern water walls and reflecting pools act as a natural acoustic barrier, using the soothing sound of flowing water to wash away the noise of the outside world. Moving deeper along the axis, residents enter a carefully designed bamboo forest. The tall bamboo and low shrubs create a rich, layered landscape, evoking a quiet, meditative atmosphere. Wooden boardwalks wind through the trees, encouraging people to slow down and feel the rhythm of nature in the dappled light. This path serves not just as a walkway, but as a spiritual corridor for relaxation.
To break away from the enclosed feel of traditional courtyards, the design introduces open water-edge platforms and winding streams. The clear water reflects the surrounding greenery and architecture, creating a living painting. Waterside bars and shaded seating steps blur the line between people and water, inviting residents to sit by the stream or chat under the trees, echoing the ancient tradition of poetic gatherings. This translates the lifestyle of ancient scholars into functional spaces for modern use. Additionally, the semi-outdoor sunken booth serves as both a social hub for neighbors and a quiet retreat for reading, perfectly balancing privacy and openness. Every spot is thoughtfully designed to offer clear views and a pleasant atmosphere.
More than a landscape, this project embodies a return to refined living—a profound harmony where nature, humanity, past, and present seamlessly intertwine.
