H1 Huelva began with a simple question: how can an Asian dining space feel connected to the city in which it lives?
Rather than creating a conventional Japanese-themed sushi restaurant, we looked to Huelva and Andalusia for inspiration. Huelva’s deep connection with the Age of Exploration introduced ideas of the sea, navigation and cultural encounters, while the expressive movement and emotional intensity of flamenco became another layer of the design narrative.
These references are not reproduced literally. Instead, they are translated into space through flowing forms, water-inspired textures, reflective surfaces, warm timber, stone, vegetation and rhythmic lighting. Curves and changing reflections evoke the movement of water and the idea of a journey, while warmer colors and more expressive spatial moments introduce the energy and rhythm associated with southern Spain.
Natural elements soften the scale of the restaurant and create moments of intimacy within a large sushi buffet environment. Different dining areas unfold like individual scenes along a journey, giving guests opportunities to discover the space rather than experience it all at once.
For us, H1 Huelva is ultimately about encounter: between East and West, past and present, movement and stillness. We wanted the restaurant to belong to Huelva while still retaining a contemporary Asian identity—a place where food, local memory and design can meet naturally.
