Conceived as "THE L.I.V.E. ENGINE", an engine for connection and growth, Cummins Beijing Headquarters translates the operating logic of an engine—diverse components, precise coordination and continuous output—into an approximately 18,000-square-metre workplace powered by people, space, technology, culture and the environment.
Moving beyond a singular form, this project creates a headquarters design approach that is distinctly Cummins and viable for long-term use. It transforms the engine's principles of modular cooperation, precise connection, and continuous drive into workplace planning. Direct circulation, tiered access control, shared hubs, and reconfigurable modules collectively support the efficient operation of a large headquarters. A first-generation Cummins engine, positioned at the main entrance, is integrated through sightlines, scale, lighting, and its relationship with the surrounding public space, serving as the first cultural landmark encountered by employees and visitors. Reclaimed mechanical components are reassembled into an exploded-view art installation, achieving a contemporary reinterpretation of industrial heritage. Additionally, waste such as coffee grounds is recycled via 3D printing into wayfinding and signage, closing the loop from operational by-product to spatial asset.
Guided by a full-lifecycle sustainability strategy, this project achieves a material reuse rate of 25%, complemented by an intelligent environmental regulation system and flexible spatial layouts. Rooted in Cummins' century-long industrial legacy, it reinterprets "power" as the ability to connect people, generate ideas and sustain collective growth, redefining the value of industrial heritage within the contemporary workplace.
