ANLAN BEIJING is inspired by the cultural heritage of Beijing’s royal gardens, drawing from the historical context of the surrounding Yuanmingyuan and Summer Palace. As places where Eastern garden philosophy and Western architectural aesthetics converged, these imperial landscapes provide the foundation for a contemporary interpretation of elegance, order, and cultural dialogue.

The design explores the concept of modern Chinoiserie, translating traditional Eastern aesthetics into a refined contemporary spatial language. Rather than replicating historical elements, the project reinterprets the spirit of classical gardens through proportion, rhythm, and spatial experience. Traditional motifs such as decorative patterns, architectural details, and intangible cultural elements are abstracted and transformed into modern materials, lighting, and structural expressions, allowing cultural memory to be renewed within a contemporary setting.

The spatial planning follows the philosophy of traditional Chinese garden design — creating a journey through changing scenes and emotional transitions. Inspired by the sequence of “gate, corridor, pavilion, garden, and architecture,” the space unfolds through layers of arrival, movement, pause, and discovery. Each area reveals a different atmosphere as visitors move through the space, creating a dynamic dialogue between architecture, nature, and human experience.

The project also draws inspiration from the Western architectural vocabulary of Yuanmingyuan’s historic European-style structures, abstracting elements such as arches, vaults, and stone details into modern compositions with balanced proportions and rhythmic structures. This integration reflects the cultural exchange of the 18th century while establishing a new contemporary identity.

Materiality plays an essential role in shaping the atmosphere. The purity of white marble, the texture of stone, and the lightness of metal accents create a layered environment where solidity and softness coexist. Through the interplay of light, shadow, and material, ANLAN BEIJING presents a calm yet sophisticated spatial experience — not as a revival of the past, but as a dialogue between history, culture, and modern life.
