Origins: Innovative Museum Management
Located within the Shihsanhang Museum of Archaeology, 13 CAFÉ opened in December 2025 as Taiwan’s first museum café integrating archaeology and sustainability. By combining exhibitions, dining, and leisure experiences, it redefines the traditional museum café model and creates a space where cultural education meets everyday life.
Beyond supporting sustainable museum operations, 13 CAFÉ uses dining as a medium for cultural interpretation, transforming archaeological knowledge into everyday experiences. Its concept integrates three core values—cultural education, sustainable development, and a healthy, non-toxic environment—expressed through its space, dining, programs, and products.
Spatial Design
The interior draws inspiration from the earthy tones and textures of archaeological artifacts. Walls are finished with natural Taiwanese coatings mixed with clam shells and ceramic fragments, recreating the stratified layers of the Shihsanhang archaeological site while naturally regulating humidity.
Furniture is crafted from certified Taiwanese timber and reclaimed pruning wood, reflecting circular design and local craftsmanship while reducing carbon emissions. The space received the GD Green Interior Certification (Gold Level), providing a non-toxic, low-VOC environment that supports both human health and environmental sustainability.
Culinary and Product Design
13 CAFÉ collaborates with Sweet Vegan, Genmai Daiginjo, Leezen Social Enterprise, and Dorothy Pomelo Farm, using locally sourced organic and sustainably grown ingredients to create plant-based, additive-free, low-carbon cuisine.
Inspired by the museum collection, menu items reinterpret artifacts such as the Anthropomorphic Jar and Ring-Shaped Jade Jue. Archaeological strata are expressed through layered rice burgers, tiramisu, and beverages, while a range of creative merchandise extends the museum experience beyond the gallery.
Program Design
Through various programs, 13 CAFÉ encourages community engagement and public participation. For example, Archaeology-themed Vegan Dessert DIY Workshops invite participants to create artifact-inspired sweets, offering a fun and relaxing experience while promoting low-carbon living.
Social Impact
13 CAFÉ demonstrates how cultural heritage and sustainability can be integrated through space, food, and everyday experiences. By bringing archaeology closer to daily life, it offers an innovative museum model that combines cultural education, environmental responsibility, and lifestyle aesthetics.
