The project nestled in the serene landscapes of Asheville, North Carolina, harnesses the profound support that nature can provide to offer comfort and peace to those navigating life’s final journey. By addressing emotional, psychological, and physical needs, the design creates a calming environment that alleviates stress and anxiety. Asheville’s rolling mountains, vibrant forests, and mild climate offer an ideal backdrop for a facility dedicated to healing and tranquility. The region’s deep connection to nature and its emphasis on outdoor living align seamlessly with the project’s goal of making the natural environment a central element of the care experience.

Rooted in the belief that nature can profoundly heal both the body and the mind, this project aims to create an immersive environment where the boundaries between built and natural worlds dissolve. The design allows the beauty and tranquility of the surrounding landscape to become an integral part of the healing experience.

Architecturally, the hospice is characterized by curved shapes that echo the gentle contours of the surrounding mountains. Extensive use of curtain walls blurs the line between interior and exterior spaces, allowing natural light to flood the interiors and providing uninterrupted views of the gardens and the landscape beyond. This design approach fosters a seamless connection between the indoor environment and the natural world, creating a sense of openness and freedom essential for emotional and psychological well-being.

In addition to the required programs, the project features three gardens—Meditation Garden, Communal Garden, and Vegetable Garden—each serving a unique purpose and enhancing the overall healing environment. The goal of this project is to create a space that supports not only physical care but also nurtures the emotional and spiritual well-being of patients and their families. By fully embracing the healing power of nature, this design offers solace, comfort, and peace to all who enter.
