This original professional footwear, tailored exclusively for Yingge Dance performances, is independently created by a 17-year-old high school student whose ancestral home is Chaoyang, Guangdong—the birthplace of this 300-year-old Chinese National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Growing up surrounded by the gongs and drums of Yingge Dance, I was deeply struck by the frequent ankle sprains and foot injuries performers sustained after 12+ hour, 30km Lunar New Year parades. For generations, dancers have relied on thin-soled traditional cloth shoes to complement their performance costumes. To ease wear-related injuries, they often mix and match basketball shoes, running shoes and casual sneakers, yet very few products on the market are customized for the unique high-intensity movements of this intangible heritage art form.
My core design rule: every Chaoshan cultural element ties to a targeted function, with ankle protection as the top priority. Upper lines drawn from Yingge mask contours fully lock the foot during dynamic movements; outsole diamond texture inspired by traditional Chaoshan window grilles delivers reliable all-terrain grip; heel support shaped like the upturned eaves of Chaoshan old houses absorbs jump impact. Most critically, the widened forefoot forms a dedicated anti-rollover structure, drastically cutting ankle sprain risks during sharp turns and lateral movements. All custom colorways are extracted from traditional Yingge performance costumes to preserve the show’s visual integrity.
The design also features a replaceable midsole to reduce long-term costs for performers, balancing functional safety, cultural authenticity and sustainability.
