2026 Changhua Moon Shadow Lantern Festival

Located in the Bagua Mountain Scenic Area in Changhua, this project transforms the annual lantern festival into a nighttime narrative of light and shadow by integrating cultural landmarks, character IP, and lighting art. Coinciding with the Year of the Horse, the curatorial concept introduces the beloved character Rody as the icon. With its vivid colors and lively posture, combined with the joyful imagination of a circus, the festival creates a festive environment reminiscent of a dreamlike theatrical stage. The Great Buddha represents history and faith, while circus-inspired character lanterns symbolize joy and imagination. Visitors are invited to enter the scene and play with the lights themselves, allowing the mountain city’s night to awaken again through the glow of lanterns.
The lantern zone adopts a story-driven experience as its curatorial strategy. Through characters, scenes, and carefully arranged lighting routes, the act of viewing lanterns becomes an unfolding adventure. The main lantern reaches 10 meters in height, featuring surprising appearances of Rody and Chibi Maruko-chan, surrounded by multiple character installations that transform the entire site into a nighttime amusement park.
Another highlight lies in the projection mapping performance on the Bagua Mountain Great Buddha. The solemn Buddha statue becomes a dynamic stage of martial arts-inspired light projections, as if the rhythm of kung fu films were brought into the nightscape of the mountain city. This dramatic contrast between cultural landmark and entertainment spectacle allows the festival to maintain cultural depth while remaining accessible through popular culture. As a result, the entire exhibition area becomes a luminous theater that blends childlike imagination, festive celebration, and urban memory.
