Tofu Tile is an innovative wall‑cladding solution that unites acoustic performance with a calm and tactile aesthetic. Created by acclaimed Danish designer Cecilie Manz, the system is crafted from ARCHISONIC® Cotton, a next‑generation material derived from sustainably sourced cotton linters—an industrial by‑product that would otherwise go to waste—combined with natural mineral pigments. The result is a surface that is both visually understated and environmentally forward‑thinking.
Made exclusively from natural and renewable resources, Tofu Tile embodies the principles of circular design. Its production process prioritises resource responsibility through recycling, water reuse, and minimal waste generation. At the end of its life cycle, every tile can be returned to the production loop: by simply reshaping the material and adding water, it can be regenerated indefinitely without compromising quality. This regenerative capability ensures long‑term value, reducing environmental impact while extending the life of the material.
Inspired by the foundation of Scandinavian design—simplicity, utility, and honesty—Manz focused on highlighting the intrinsic character of the material. As she notes, “It’s a loaf of a single, genuine material, not laminated, glossy or artificial. It is what it is—that’s aesthetically appealing.” This philosophy guided the decision to avoid superfluous decoration, allowing the quiet beauty of the material to define the identity of the tile.
The design features a subtle embossed weave pattern, referencing classic textile canvases once used in interior applications. The minimal texture introduces depth and warmth without dominating a space, making Tofu Tile a versatile solution for environments seeking clarity, calm, and a refined acoustic experience.
Available in five soft, natural hues—Putty White, Greenish, Paper Gray, Clay, and Flax—the palette is produced entirely without chemical dyes or artificial colourants. Two surface finishes, Fine Straight and Fine Angle, enhance the perception of softness and evoke the familiarity of woven textiles.
