水林蕃薯厝 Shuilin Fanshucuo

Fanshucuo is located in Shuilin Township, Yunlin County, with a development history of nearly 350 years. Known for its strong scholarly tradition, the community has long nurtured professionals such as judges, lawyers, and physicians, earning it the reputation of a “Top Scholar Village.”
In recent years, through continuous environmental improvement, landscape enhancement, and joint investment and participation by community volunteers, multiple idle plots have gradually been transformed into distinctive spaces that combine leisure, social interaction, and cultural meaning. These spaces have become important venues for residents’ daily activities and for visitors to experience local character, while also effectively strengthening community cohesion and a shared sense of identity.
The project site is located alongside the community’s primary circulation route and was originally a pig-rearing facility. Long-term abandonment resulted in cluttered surroundings and accumulated waste, negatively affecting overall environmental quality. From the early planning stage, the project began with environmental cleanup, removing waste and overgrown vegetation to restore spatial order.
A “Straw Hat Gate” was designed at the entrance as a welcoming symbol, representing the perseverance and resilience of farmers working under the intense sun. It also serves as a key visual landmark for the site.
The former pig house was transformed into a “Green Canteen,” functioning as a shared kitchen and dining space where residents can cook and eat together. Through food, the space helps bring people closer and encourages everyday interaction. Two large stoves were installed inside. Water buckets once used for poultry farming were repurposed as lamp shades, while old windows removed during dismantling were reused as drying racks, putting principles of material reuse and environmental construction into practice.
The overall design preserves the original architectural appearance while incorporating wheelchair-accessible areas and alarm systems to ensure universal accessibility and public safety. This allows residents to use the space with confidence, comfort, and ease.
