This project centers on the Hangzhou section of the Grand Canal as its cultural foundation, translating the canal’s natural flow, spatial layers, and historical significance into a modern cultural and art gallery design. Inspired by the iconic Persimmon Calyx pattern from Hangzhou silk, the design reinterprets traditional motifs with precise control over light, materials, and proportions. Rather than serving as a mere symbol, Hangzhou’s cultural essence is manifested in a tangible spatial experience, shaping a contemporary art gallery environment rich in Eastern cultural depth and meaning.
The design’s essence prioritizes cultural translation over simple representation. Rather than using motifs or narratives directly, the canal and Persimmon Calyx pattern are deconstructed into core principles of order, rhythm, and layering. These principles are integrated into circulation, light, and spatial stratification. This approach reassembles cultural elements into a walkable and perceptible spatial language, allowing Hangzhou’s cultural identity to be understood and experienced from a contemporary perspective.
The design, inspired by “A Luminous Canal, a Flowing Realm of Prosperity,” emphasizes semi-translucent stone volumes as its primary spatial element. A carefully selected palette of low-saturation materials, paired with a darkened ceiling, establishes a sophisticated yet layered atmosphere. Light interacts with the material surfaces, creating shimmering effects reminiscent of rippling water. This interplay of form and illumination not only enhances the spatial experience but also captures the subtle, profound aesthetic sensibility intrinsic to Eastern culture, fostering a serene and reflective environment.
The spatial design is intentionally crafted to embody the dynamic nature of a canal, incorporating elements of movement, pauses, and exchanges. It integrates essential functions such as reception, exhibition, meeting, and reading areas. A continuous circulation loop, along with flexible spatial configurations, allows for seamless connections between various usage modes without disruption. This design approach enhances the clarity of the gallery space while significantly improving user comfort and overall experience.
