The work takes Taiwan’s Dongmen Market as its theme. In a time when people are absorbed in mobile phones and indoor lifestyles, the designer hopes to bring attention back to the grassroots rhythms that still pulse through the city. A market is not merely a site of buying and selling; it is a condensation of labor, craftsmanship, and Taiwan’s everyday life. She aims to capture the faintly rising warmth created by shopkeepers, vendors, and customers intersecting with one another, so that this overlooked temperature can be seen again.
Streets and Alleys resembles a condensed urban documentary, compressing the heat, sound, and humid atmosphere of a market onto a single sheet of paper. Its most captivating feature lies in the layered depth of the composition: in the foreground, a vendor swiftly flips ingredients in a pan, the movement so vivid one can almost hear metal striking against the wok; in the midground, customers wait with plastic bags in hand, their clothing folds and raincoat reflections embodying the textures of Taiwan’s daily life; in the background, bright red, yellow, and blue signboards and lightboxes establish a strong visual rhythm within the small market.
Although the scene is crowded with objects and crisscrossing movement, clear perspective and well-defined contrast ensure that each area finds its proper place. The most intriguing aspect is the sense of “repetition”; paper boxes, plastic bags, and bottles may appear chaotic, yet they form an unexpected order, as if life itself is always searching for equilibrium within disorder.
The artist excels at using high-saturation colors to portray Taiwan’s market culture. The hues seem alive, pushing and merging against one another, ultimately weaving together the moist pulse of the city. The work magnifies “the unnoticed everyday,” reminding viewers that beauty has always been quietly present beneath the dim streetlights at the corner.
