Veins of Wellbeing

The project began with a newly purchased house in Kaohsiung, pressed between adjoining walls, its interiors dim, poorly ventilated, and layout that never suited the family’s life. Renovation here was not cosmetic but essential, transforming an ill-fitting structure into a coherent home aligned with their aspirations for health, faith, and sustainability.
The design team approached the commission with the intent to reconcile symbolism, wellbeing, and restraint within. Rather than imposing overt motifs, references to faith and perseverance were distilled into abstract patterns. Miracle of Bread and Fish forms reinterpreted in door panels and railings, arcs introduced to soften corners and construct a ceremonial rhythm. Luxurious marble was applied a calibrated gesture for its crystalline veins, resembling the unshakable foundation of family unity.
Each decision was framed as part of a renovation strategy where symbolic memory and functional necessity could coexist harmonically. An Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) system was introduced to stabilize fresh air across levels. Salvaged stone from the dismantled façade was stacked into a new garden wall, turning demolition waste into a luminous evening backdrop. Arcs and continuous wall planes managed proportions in narrow rooms, while concealed storage absorbed clutter into the architecture itself. Each move balanced reuse, restraint, and comfort.
The outcome demonstrates renovation as an act of intelligence, not embellishment — reinterpreting belief through abstraction, reusing what once was waste, and reconfiguring circulation for clarity. The house now stands as both renewal and continuity, durable in form and measured in care.
