Restoration of the Catholic Church Area of Chongzhou

**Renovation and Restoration Project of the Centuries-Old Catholic Church in Chongzhou**

The Catholic Church, located in Chengdu and originally built in 1802, is undergoing a restoration project aiming to maximize the display of its historical and cultural value. The design approach focuses on three main directions: Restoration, Exhibition, and Renewal.
1. **Restoration**: Respecting history, the design aims to reconstruct historical elements such as column bases, window lattices, and door frames. The original brick carvings will be restored as much as possible by washing and repairing the structure to remove layers of gold, white, and green paint added later, revealing the original brick and stone colors.
2. **Exhibition**: The church building features standard Western Sichuan architecture, with the roof beams utilizing a chuandou-style framework. To uncover historical fragments buried over time and create an experience of the passage of time, the design insists on removing the ceiling boards to expose the building's framework.
3. **Renewal**: From the perspective of respecting local culture and religious regulations, the design incorporates the texture of "Daoming bamboo weaving" into the dome's decoration. Considering the fire safety requirements of public buildings, stainless steel material is used for weaving, ensuring the building's sustainability for the next century. The central aisle floor features mosaic patterns, with tile designs derived and refined from the original window patterns.
The lighting design includes six layers to highlight architectural features and enhance the overall ambiance.
