Blooming Facade investigates how principles derived from natural systems can inform the design of an environmentally responsive architectural envelope. The project begins with the study of petals, examining how their opening mechanisms, layered arrangements, and color variations respond to environmental factors including sunlight, temperature, and moisture.
The research identifies two primary behaviors: opening and rotation. Throughout the growth cycle—from bud to full bloom—petals progressively increase their opening angles. Across different floral arrangements, individual petals rotate and overlap around a central core, generating variations in density, porosity, and exposure.
These principles are translated into a computational facade system governed by attractor points. Each attractor influences the rotation, opening, and density of surrounding facade units, with its effect gradually diminishing across the surface. Four opening states establish a gradient between denser, more protective areas and open, light-permeable conditions, allowing the envelope to respond to changing environmental demands.
The system is applied to the Capitol Records Building in Hollywood, Los Angeles, where the tower’s cylindrical geometry produces continuously shifting patterns of solar exposure. Solar analysis informs the location and intensity of attractors: areas receiving greater exposure develop increased facade density and coverage, while the east facade—partially shaded by an adjacent building—remains more open to preserve access to daylight.
Beyond its environmental function, the facade develops into an inhabitable extension of the existing building. Variations in depth, density, and openness generate new spatial conditions between the original curtain wall and the secondary envelope, accommodating balconies, shared public spaces, and vertical gardens. Residential areas gain intermediate outdoor zones, while larger openings extend daylight, vegetation, and exterior views into public programs.
By translating the growth and responsive behavior of petals into computational logic, environmental performance, and spatial organization, Blooming Facade reimagines the building envelope as an adaptive system—one that mediates climate while creating new opportunities for occupation, interaction, and connection to the surrounding environment.
