Yuefu Penthouse Duplex

Yuefu Duplex is a 180m² topfloor duplex penthouse, with full project execution by Yuanjie Design. The design is centered on the concept of “Authentic Life,” responding to the spatial exploration of contemporary urban residences.
In the original structure, the staircase, as a vertical circulation element, disrupted the spatial continuity between the first and second floors, while the duplex configuration suffered from uneven daylighting and a sense of oppression due to limited ceiling height. The design reinterprets the staircase from a mere functional element into a core node that integrates spatial transition and sculptural artistry. Clad in marble and wood veneer, with integrated step lighting, it creates a visually layered, hollowedout structure that allows visual and light continuity between the two levels. Daylight is introduced through the stairwell, allowing natural light to filter into the interior, thus alleviating the issues of insufficient illumination and spatial confinement typical of duplex floors.
Throughout the project, large areas of wood veneer in a natural timber style are applied, leveraging the material’s warm texture to establish a simple and natural spatial tone, while also incorporating storage functions. The ground floor features an openplan transverse living room, where a blocklike, semiopen TV feature wall serves as both a spatial divider and a circulation hub, distinguishing the living area from the tea room. The open kitchen layout, combined with an island, accommodates both Chinese and Western cooking needs and facilitates family interaction. The second floor comprises the bedroom quarters, which are connected to an outdoor terrace, creating a tranquil, comfortable, and natureintegrated living space.
