A Moment of Serenity originated from the creator's experience of seeing an elderly man reading a newspaper at a train market in Thailand. At that time, the market was bustling and crowded, yet the elderly man was fully concentrated on the pages. This state, running counter to the speed of the outside world, became the core of the artwork. After returning to Taiwan, the artist commenced the watercolor creation based on photographs, with a dimension of 64×50 cm, taking about three to four months to complete. The painter first handled the elderly man's face and skin, capturing wrinkles, light, shadow, and the traces of age, before gradually completing details such as the newspaper, clothing, slippers, and plastic bags. The Thai text and images on the newspaper retain recognizable portions, while the remaining details are generalized with brushstrokes to maintain overall authenticity.
Upon completion of the work, family and friends were mostly able to see the scene of the old man reading the paper; after understanding the naming and background, they could better feel the appreciation for focus contained within. Based on a real scene, this piece returns from a travel fragment to the watercolor paper surface, ultimately focusing into an artwork about gazing, patience, and everyday memories, while also recording the creator's keen observation of the pace of life.
