Located within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Sizewell region presents a contrasting historical landscape shaped by both industrial development and ecological conservation. The site is defined by the coexistence of the contemporary Sizewell Nuclear Power Stations and the nearby medieval Leiston Abbey, with the ecological reserve RSPB Minsmere located close by.
This project proposes to connect these two disparate landscape worlds, revealing changes in the dimension of time, activating triggers of memory, and conveying stories across space and time.
Through a botanical planting strategy and a wildlife-driven seed dispersal system, native plant species are reintroduced across the landscape to form ecological links between the two sites. These interventions uncover the ecological dimensions of memory, gradually attracting lost native species back to the region while restoring fragmented habitats.
Adapted to local climate and environmental conditions, native plant communities are capable of forming resilient and largely self-sustaining ecosystems over time.
The landscape is therefore envisioned as a living “memory-scape”, where ecological regeneration, historical narratives and spatial experience unfold together, revealing forgotten stories through the gradual botanical revival of the land.
