Color Rain transforms the historic city center of Rennes into an immersive urban experience by suspending thousands of blue and green ribbons in the sky. The palette draws inspiration from nature: blue from the city’s rivers and skies, and from the surrounding landscapes. Small birds were added for a pop of color, to enliven the canopy and reinforce the illusion of a living sky.
The project addresses a pressing urban challenge: how to introduce thermal comfort into dense heritage streets where permanent architectural alterations or tree planting are limited. Rather than applying a purely technical solution, the design proposes a creative, sensory one. Thousands of lightweight coloured ribbons are suspended overhead, creating an ombre ceiling that filters sunlight, creating shade and reducing temperatures in the pedestrian corridor.
Wind activates subtle movement, ensuring the artwork remains dynamic rather than static, creating soft sounds reminiscent of rainfall, which is the source of the installation’s name. This combination of sound, motion, and color creates a multisensory experience that encourages pedestrians to pause, look upward, and perceive the street in a new, contemplative way.
Technically, the structure was engineered for seasonal installation with minimal impact on the historic façades. The system integrates into existing anchoring points and can be mounted and dismantled efficiently, reinforcing its temporary and adaptable character.
Beyond environmental performance, Color Rain revitalizes the commercial heart of Rennes during the summer months, increasing dwell time and strengthening local identity. The installation has been shared widely across multiple media formats, embedding itself into the collective memory of residents and visitors alike.
By merging environmental responsiveness with expressive design, Color Rain demonstrates how temporary public art can meaningfully reshape urban experience while remaining light, reversible, and deeply impactful.
