This project renovates a brick-concrete structure built in 1992, reinterpreting it through a contemporary Modern Chinese lens. Rather than replicating traditional forms, the design adopts an expressive, freehand approach that extracts and transforms local cultural genes—the rhythm of the river, the shadow of bamboo, the aroma of wine, and the imagery of the miniature dragon rooted in intangible heritage—into a spatial narrative that connects urban renewal with cultural continuity.
Guided by the philosophy of “Superimposition of Time and Space,” the project integrates natural and cultural elements into a modern framework. Bamboo-shaped metal partitions, bamboo-weave light installations, and textured wall finishes create a restrained and tranquil atmosphere. Lighting and artworks inspired by traditional wine vessels evoke a sense of historical depth, while dragon-pattern embroidery and scale-like detailing introduce subtle dynamism. Ceiling light strips echo the flowing river, and stone textures suggest water-worn surfaces, allowing traditional references to dissolve into contemporary expression.
Spatially, the experience unfolds in sequence. The entrance uses water features and greenery as a buffer from the city. The lobby, defined by ink black and beige tones, carved window lattices, and lantern-like lighting, establishes a calm reception environment. The restaurant merges refined metal lines with bamboo textures and solid wood furniture, balancing Oriental character with modern comfort. Guest rooms are restructured to mitigate the oppressive effect of low beams and include private open-air hot spring courtyards, where bluestone pools and bamboo shadows foster retreat and seclusion.
Facing constraints such as low ceiling heights and limited daylight, the design avoids invasive interventions. Instead, it uses flowing roof lines, strategic structural integration, and precision lighting to enhance spatial openness. By preserving the original fabric while upgrading functionality, the project extends the building’s life cycle and transforms it into a contemporary sanctuary rooted in regional memory.
