The Nanjing Muxuyuan villa design comprises the holistic renovation of a historic residence from the Republican era. With "French-Republican" as its aesthetic foundation, it integrates the comfort and artistic sensibility of modern living while respecting the building's historical heritage, achieving a poetic fusion of historical architecture and contemporary life.
The external facade of the building employs dry-hanging white sand marble, accented with slender black bronze elements, creating a tranquil and noble atmosphere. Upon entering the interior, a French-style curved staircase crafted from natural travertine becomes the visual focus. Retaining the stone's original texture, it forms a tactile contrast with the matte white steel railing. Combined with the dynamic light and shadow introduced by the arched windows, it shapes a sculptural spatial narrative. The designer breaks the original layout, integrates the spiral staircase with the foyer, and uses non-full-height walls to create a flowing and subtly partitioned space.
The public area on the ground floor is laid with fossilized wood Roman mosaic flooring. The interlocking deep and light seams create a rhythm reminiscent of an abstract painting, while the natural grain lends a solid and grounded foundation to the space. The dining area floor extends towards the outdoor pool, and the outdoor swimming pool, like a sapphire, forms a visual connection with the dining room.
The master bathroom is clad in a single slab of Oriental White Onyx marble, using its ink-wash-like veining to evoke an oriental landscape aesthetic. It cleverly integrates hidden storage systems, balancing aesthetics and practicality. A dedicated elderly suite on the ground floor, equipped with two bedrooms, south-facing garden access, an independent water bar, non-slip flooring, and other age-friendly details, reflects thoughtful human-centric design. Both bedrooms offer views of the garden.
Through precise control of materials, light, shadow, and layout, the overall design constructs a natural dialogue between old and new elements, allowing the building to "breathe anew". Using natural stone as the medium and light as the brushstroke, the designer perfectly blends French romance, oriental artistic conception, and modern comfort, creating an ideal dwelling that both carries historical memory and aligns with contemporary living.
