This mug reimagines modern Western beer culture through the lens of traditional Eastern ceramic art, weaving together the ancient blue-and-white porcelain heritage of Jingdezhen with the regional identity and history of Tsingtao into a compelling narrative that speaks across both time and space.
It is meticulously crafted using authentic Yuan-dynasty blue-and-white porcelain techniques, undergoing seven major production stages—material selection, kneading, throwing on the wheel, biscuit firing, hand-painting, glazing, and final firing—comprising a total of 72 rigorous steps. Fired for 15 hours at 1300°C using traditional methods, the mug emerges with a lustrous, jade-like glaze that is refined, understated, and deeply rooted in Chinese aesthetic tradition. Its surface showcases the iconic scrolling lotus and peony motifs from the Yuan-Dynasty Blue-and-White Peony Scroll Meiping Vase, a treasured masterpiece housed in the Jingdezhen Ceramic Museum in China. These classical patterns intertwine with the illustrations of “Tsingtao Flower,” a proprietary hop variety developed by Tsingtao Brewery. This artistic blend symbolizes enduring prosperity while honoring the city’s cultural legacy and the brand’s spirit. Its base is adorned with undulating wave patterns, their flowing lines evoking the vast ocean and reflecting Tsingtao’s coastal identity, while also conveying wishes for flourishing success and a bright future.
Even the styling details are rich with meaning. The handle takes inspiration from jade pendants of the Warring States period, shaped like a soaring dragon. With its proud, upward-facing head and majestic presence, the handle combines powerful visual impact with an ergonomic curve that fits comfortably in the hand. The lid reimagines Tsingtao’s iconic “Huilan Pavilion,” transforming the landmark into a miniature pavilion rising from the sea—not merely decorative, it serves as a poetic tribute to the city’s century-old history and vibrant modern energy.
Beyond a functional vessel, this mug embodies a cultural confluence of ancient ceramic craft, a century of brewing tradition, and urban heritage. It stands as a testament to artisanal continuity, East-West dialogue, and shared emotional resonance.
