Located in the Zhengyi Section of Taipei’s Zhongshan District, the site sits adjacent to the Guanghua Digital Commercial area and Huashan 1914 Creative Park. It not only embodies the calm ambience of a quiet alley but also connects closely with the surrounding arts and cultural environment. The client envisioned a new landmark building that integrates residential and commercial functions while engaging in dialogue with the city’s urban fabric.
Collaboratively designed by AO YU Design and Architect Huang Hsiang-Long’s Studio, the project adopts the concept of a “simple frame” to articulate a modern architecture.
Drawing inspiration from the artistic spirit of Piet Mondrian, the design translates his principles of overlap, rhythm, and color into architectural language. The building mass employs a terraced, setback configuration, with volumes arranged in staggered heights to create a layered skyline. This approach allows the structure to appear light and non-oppressive within the quiet alley. The roof projections act like brushstrokes across the city’s canvas, extending the building’s vertical language.
The façade is structured around clear framing lines, with glass, metal strips, and a rhythm of solid and void windows composing a modern cadence. From a distance, the composition resembles an abstract geometric painting.
At ground level, the corner is opened to enhance transparency for commercial activity, enriching street-level interaction. Office spaces and residences are arranged across the mid- to upper floors, fulfilling the program’s mixed-use demands while ensuring privacy and views for occupants. Through this layered configuration, the building balances artistry and everyday life, embedding itself into the neighborhood while serving as a subtle yet commanding urban landmark.
