Shared Simplicity

The 59.5 square meters apartment in Sanchong Dist., New Taipei City, was customized for a couple and their cat. The design centers on the lifestyle of “cohabitation between humans and pets,” taking cues from the cat’s movement patterns and needs, as well as the couple’s habits and love for reading. The layout, proportions, and lighting were reinterpreted through this lens. To accommodate all three inhabitants comfortably, the design expanded the social area within a compact space using open sightlines and soft material transitions to create a harmonious, multi-species everyday setting.
The design’s central concept is the interaction between the cat and its humans. In the piano room, a custom shelving system doubles as a cat perch, allowing the wife to play music while the cat explores freely. The shelves extend vertically toward a glass display case, creating a layered observation route. The TV wall acts as a visual centerpiece, integrating a bench and a hidden litter box. Its pull-out drawer system allows for easy cleaning while maintaining a unified, low-profile aesthetic that aligns with the home’s minimal design language.
The kitchen island serves as the heart of the home—a hub for meals, coffee, conversations, and work. Chamfered edges and soft curves lighten its visual weight, while recessed lines add gentle definition. The entryway features pale pink hexagonal tiles that signal a soft transition, paired with a circular pendant light and curved design that echoes throughout the space. Three adjacent doors in the dining area (leading to the master bedroom, bathroom, and second bedroom) are concealed within a white wall, maintaining visual purity and preserving a sense of ritual in spatial flow.
