Transforming a 35-ping (approx. 115 sqm) older apartment for a dynamic skincare entrepreneur, her husband, four children, and two helpers, this Taichung residence demanded rapid execution—ready for construction within two months—and ingenious storage solutions for a bustling household. The client, with an architecture background, sought a design that was both practical and quickly implementable.
The design prioritizes seamless integration of immense storage. Custom-built, curvilinear cabinetry flows throughout, softening transitions, cleverly concealing structural pillars, and even housing an LG Styler near the entrance. This bespoke carpentry, chosen for its durability and adaptability over dimensionally-restrictive system cabinets (though system panels were used for doors to save time), maximizes every inch. To meet the tight deadline, existing quartz floor tiles were overlaid with woven vinyl flooring, achieving a swift, seamless aesthetic without disruptive levelling work.
Strategic spatial reconfiguration was key. The TV wall was subtly shifted, carving out an essential 20cm for wardrobes in adjacent rooms. This "interrupted" TV wall design, slightly protruding with the ceiling, visually expands the shared hallway. Even this shallow wall incorporates storage, exemplifying the project's commitment to utility. In the living area, where the ceiling dips to 2.5m, a deliberately upward-sweeping curve enhances the perception of height.
A calming palette of white, warm grey flooring with orange accents, and a light milky-tea TV wall creates a serene backdrop, a "blank canvas" for the family’s vibrant life to unfold. With a single aspect for natural light in a deep floor plan, reflective surfaces and strategically placed 4000K linear lighting amplify brightness and define zones, fostering a sense of extension and understated craft.
The core achievements are: exceptional spatial flow despite abundant storage, allowing easy movement and interaction; material choices that visually expand the compact space; and a profoundly stress-free environment. By limiting materials and focusing on uncluttered lines, the design promotes relaxation and connection, proving that thoughtful design can create a tranquil, highly functional home even under pressure. Green-certified materials and formaldehyde-free paint further contribute to a healthy living environment.
