This project centers on the Hangzhou Grand Canal, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, aiming to preserve its historical and cultural significance while revitalizing it as an urban park. Serving as a bridge between history and modernity, the park is designed to showcase and pass on the profound heritage of the Grand Canal through contemporary landscape design. The park integrates cultural storytelling with functional design. Drawing inspiration from the Grand Canal’s historical elements—such as its shipping legacy, bridges, and waterworks—these are transformed into unique landscape features. Key highlights include: 1. Cultural Integration: Historical elements of the canal are embedded into pathways, seating areas, and sculptures, creating a narrative-rich landscape.2. Signature Features: Water Stage: Inspired by the canal’s water culture, the stage serves as both a cultural landmark and a venue for performances, evoking memories of traditional waterborne life. Canal Viewing Platform: Offering unobstructed views of the canal, this space combines visual storytelling with interpretive signage and digital exhibits to immerse visitors in the canal’s history. 3. Interactive Education: Through themed play areas, exhibitions, and interactive installations, visitors of all ages can experience and learn about the canal’s legacy. The park is divided into zones for white-collar workers, the elderly, children, and tourists, each tailored to their needs while echoing the canal’s essence. This design seamlessly weaves heritage into daily urban life, creating a vibrant and meaningful public space that celebrates the Grand Canal’s timeless value.
