A chair to serve generations. Made from renewable materials, designed and made to last longer than its materials will take to re-grow. To be stable enough to meet the needs of the young and old alike. To aid and promote good posture with comfort and support, while also being able to effortlessly accommodate all the favourite postures of the rebellious. To be reliable, serviceable and able to maintain visual interest over its intended lifespan.
This chair explores what is possible when we challenge the association between sheet timber materials and disposable furniture.
The chevron seat and back transfer loads to the thighs and ribcage, removing pressure from the spine and aligning posture when seated in the conventional manner. It also comfortably accommodates seated positions that are askew, with crossed legs, sideways, and even reversed, Keeler style. The front corners provide a reassuring and stable grip for those who feel the need to assist their entry and exit of the chair.
The seat is constructed from 12mm birch ply laminated with 3mm saw oak veneers so as to provide extended resistance to wear. Its panels are assembled with 24 long loose tenons made of oak. The seat is attached to the two leg braces by glued, full length sliding dovetails encapsulated within the chevron construction of the seat and providing positive mechanical connection in addition to adhesion.
The laminated hollow form birch ply legs are attached to the leg braces in the same manner, with full length, glued sliding dovetails. Monocoque in form, the inherent rigidity of the leg and their method of fixture stabilises the chair by maintaining consistent separation of the front and back feet. Meanwhile, the close proximity connection of the two leg braces allows the legs to rotate slightly in relation to one another, so that under a load of 80kg material flex will accommodate and adapt to a floor out of level by 6mm on its four oak feet.
The chair is finished with Danish oil, a common and easily reapplied finish.
